Improv ClassTime, space, and energy… The root of dance. Every year in my creative movement classes I tackle each one of these items. Today I thought I’d share with you one of the ways my classes explores space through the Prop Of The Month series. The props this month are “stretchies.” At my studio we have elastics that are sewn into a loop. However, Carrie, at ThisMamaMakesStuff.com has a great tutorial plus activity cards to help make this movement exploration even more fun.

In my class I use the activity cards which include making shapes on your own and with partners. The kids naturally use their hands and feet to make shapes, so I also put my “Miss Alissa” twist on them. Here’s what we do:

1. Explore making shapes with different parts of their bodies.
– knees, elbows, shoulders, chin, and head

2. Travel
– High, medium, and low levels
– Turning, jumping, sliding, rolling, and so on…

3. Partner up! Making a shape using two stretchies.
– Grow your group. Continue to make the groups larger and larger until the entire class is working together to make a shape.

4. Play!
– Move close together and then stretch apart.
– Make the shape travel in a circle in one direction then the other.
– Explore levels
– Jump
– Spiral into each other and apart

Do you use stretchies in your class? I’d love to hear what you do with them or just share   them with us on instagram. Use hash tag  #dancestretchies
